New York Fashion Week - Autumn/Winter 2014 Overview

I'm finally writing about my second New York Fashion Week experience! Needless to say, a week full of fashion shows and events was followed by a week full of deadlines and catching up on sleep.

I had so much fun in the city and have really begun to feel more at home there. Surprisingly, my affinity for NYC has taken a little time to unfold. Of course, it wouldn't be as enjoyable without the hospitality of my cousin and best friend, Maddie. She's shown me some great places and we've already made a lot of unforgettable memories, such as the time we tried meeting at a ferryboat party and ended up on opposite shores of Manhattan! But more on that later. Here's a little overview of the fashion week events I attended, people I met, clothes I wore and food I ate. I'll be posting about specific shows and designers soon.

Monday

What I wore: A gold, vintage blazer and green sweater layered over a blue button down, dark blue tuxedo pants, authentic Greek fisherman's hat, Badgley Mischka Julia Nappa satchel, and Superga sneakers (later had to change into winter boots due to the high snow banks and heaps of slush).

By Misha
Where I went: I attended the By Misha presentation at the Lali Lali Gallery in SoHo and met some very wonderful people. I interviewed the three designers featured and I met some fabulous fashionistas and bloggers. More details to come!
That night: I was in pure euphoria. It was my first night in the city, I'd already met inspiring people, and seen beautiful clothes.
Beverage of the evening: Owl's Brew Tea with rum

Tuesday
William Okpo
What I wore: A new satin, floral dress I just ordered from Victoria's Secret. I was so eager to wear it that I didn't consider how light it would be on the coldest night of the week! It was insufficient even with leather accented leggings, Cole Hann ankle boots, a Cynthia Rowley cowl scarf, a beanie and a leather jacket.

Leather Japan
Where I went: I got lost in SoHo and missed my first show by ten minutes. Who knew exiting from the subway in the wrong direction could veer you so far off course? That evening I went to the William Okpo show. Just as I was gaining more confidence in my sense of direction, I forgot half of the address to the Leather Japan gallery opening and took two cabs to get to there.

Maddie and Daniel
That night: Complimentary shuttles took everyone from the gallery to the after party that was to be on a ferryboat. I invited Maddie to meet me there and gave her the address we both thought was at the Chelsea Piers. Half an hour later, my shuttle stopped on Wall Street. Maddie was almost "there" but I wasn't leaving on the boat without her. I called her and we soon realized she was on the coast facing New Jersey and I was on the opposite facing Brooklyn. It was time to scratch plans and figure out new ones. I ran into the nearest Duane Reade to keep warm and charge my phone, got a cab, and finally met up with Maddie. At that point, all we wanted was warm pizza and a relaxing drink. So we ended the night at a cozy bar with her boyfriend and some delicious BBQ chicken pizza.
Beverage of the evening: Blue Moon

Wednesday

What I wore: A vintage, angora sweater dress on top of a printed skirt with fur winter boots, leather jacket, and a floppy, felt hat. Of course, I also carried my Badgley Mischka bag.

Mega Mega Projects' AW14 Preview
Where I went: I stopped by the AW14 Preview by Mega Mega Projects and interviewed a couple budding jewelry designers. It was a very intimate event that focused on small collections of high quality craftsmanship.

Zink Magazine fashion event
That night: I met Maddie at B & Co. in midtown for Zink Magazine's fashion event party. We had fun taking pictures of our outfits and catching up on our day.
Beverage of the evening: Cranberry and vodka.

Thursday

What I wore: A red cable-knit sweater on top of a white button down with leather pants, fur boots, ruffled scarf, beanie and a wool, vintage coat.

Doughnut Plant
Where I went: Late that morning, Maddie brought me to the Doughnut Plant to try what she told me were the best doughnuts ever. She was right! We had hazelnut, chocolate, chocolate chip and their Valentine's special, rose. Since we were fairly close to the next fashion week event I had on my agenda, she accompanied me to KOTUR's AW14 preview at the Standard hotel. It was quite the journey! There were puddles and slush at every intersection and it was impossible to get to the next block without stepping into eight inches of water. On our very wet way back to her apartment, we grabbed Mexican at a nearby food cart. My tacos were so delicious they made me forget all about those treacherous puddles.

Maddie was invincible in her solid rain boots!
That night: While I'd been wearing my "waterproof" winter boots, they were no match for NYC puddles. I learned that a good pair of rain boots is an absolute necessity in this city. Maddie lent me hers for my last event of the week, Samantha Pleet's AW14 collection film premiere at the Wolverine store. I was really excited for this one because I'd covered her last collection in the fall. There was no way the weather would stop me from covering my first NYFW followup! More details to come!
Beverage of the evening: Red wine.

Samantha Pleet

----------------

My boyfriend came into the city for the weekend and I stayed until the following Tuesday. We had a really nice time together and between my internship work, we visited the dinosaurs at the American Museum of Natural History, had giant slices of pizza with Maddie and Daniel, took a slippery walk through Central Park, and ate lots of yummy bagels!

Sunday Recommendations

Bonjour mes amis ! What are you doing this fine Sunday? Not sure? No problem! I'll lend you my weekend to do list and maybe it'll inspire you to create something or motivate you to exercise. Or maybe you'll just decide it's a good day to be a couch potato and catch up on your favorite shows, which is always good too!

     1. Be your own jewelry designer on Kendra Scott.

Kendra Scott jewelry is always divine; the designs are sleek and simple while the colored gems add character and spunk. Now, you can create your own unique pieces with the site's Color Bar, choosing the metal, design, and gems that you want. When I found this I couldn't stop experimenting with different color palettes and combinations!

     2. Go see Water for Elephants for a second time.

Okay, I've never been one to waste money at the movies watching a film I already saw, but if I ever was, this would be the movie I'd go see again. It was inspiring, heartbreaking, and sweet and the actors did a fine job. I am definitely not one of Robert Pattison's adoring fans, but his surprisingly good performance made me see him in a new light, and perhaps I have a little more respect for him now. Reese, on the other hand has always been one of my favorites and her part delivered as I knew it would. I loved Christoph Waltz in Inglorious Basterds (one of my all-time faves) so I was excited to see him in a new role. This one was a bit darker but none the less, he played the part very well. Costumes are one of the best parts of a film and they sure didn't disappoint. Reese's exquisite circus outfits and gorgeous satin gowns were dazzling!

     3. Polish off your Easter candy.

I've been munching on jelly beans all week but I still have an entire package of Peeps left!

     4. Skim through all your unread Refinery29 newsletters that have been accumulating since April 8th.

My email piles up way too fast, partly because I'm subscribed to a few more sites than I probably should be, but also because I never have time to read all of them. My favorites are from Refinery29 and Fashionista, so those are usually the only ones I read.

     5. Make a dress out of vintage scarves.

Last summer (when I made better use of my Google Reader) I found an awesome DIY dress and I've been wanting to make it ever since. On the blog The Glamourai, Kelly made a simple dress using two scarves and a couple chains. It looks really easy so I'm hoping to finally make it today!

     6. Work out with Jillian.

I've been following a regimen of working out for 30 minutes every other day using my Jillian Michaels DVD and I've gotten great results. I started a few months ago and ever since, I've felt so much better and have even gained a little muscle! During drama rehearsals, my workouts kinda fell to the waist side, but now I'm getting back into things. The DVD I currently use has three different 20 minute workouts, so motivating myself to exercise is easy when I know I'm not taking a huge chunk out of my day to workout.

     7. Catch up on America's Next Top Model

I've been following all season long, but this week I didn't get a chance to watch. Alexandria is really the only one I have a problem with because she acts like such a diva. Britni is my favorite and I'm really hoping she wins Cycle 16.

Savvy Shopping Sunday Kick Off

I've decided to switch some things around. Instead of having my Who Belongs to These Shoes posts on Sundays I will have them on Wednesdays. Then, on Sundays I will have my new segment Savvy Shopping Sunday. I receive countless emails and newsletters from my favorite stores, so I thought it would be a good idea to spread the love and fill you in on sales, gifts with purchases, free shipping, and discount codes. So grab your remote (to watch Sunday night football, of course) and your laptop and get ready for some savvy shopping!

I hope all you fabulous ladies (and gents) have had a lovely weekend! Mine was great until the Patriots just lost their playoff game against the Jets! I was able to see one of my graduated friends while she was home from college...we went to a concert on Friday, which was pretty awesome. Then today, I did a little shopping with what was left on my Christmas giftcards and I also have tomorrow off from school. So I guess all these lovely things will help me take my mind off the fact that the Patriots had an amazing season, but had to blow their chances of ending it with a trophy because of their poor playmaking tonight. And I guess all these lovely things will get me through the fact that I'm not going to be able to watch them play again until September.

     Goodbye football season : /

From One End of DC to the Other

I recently got back from a trip to Alexandria, Virginia with my family. My sister lives down there so we went to visit her, as well as make a few day-trips to Washington D.C. We left last Thursday and stayed until Monday. The car ride was a long 9 hours, but it was worth getting to see my sister and nice being in the city for a change. We spent our first day at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History, looking at all the exhibits until it was nearly closing time. We took the metro back to Alexandria and joined my sister and her boyfriend for dinner at a delicious, authentic Greek restaurant. The next day we all spent at the Smithsonian National Zoo...my favorite animal was the panda! Afterwords, we ate yummy thin crust pizza on the sidewalk at a street-side Italian restaurant. The last day, we walked all around D.C. to see the Washington Monument, WWII Memorial, Lincoln Memorial, and the Korean War Memorial. That night, we drove to National Harbor, ate at an amazing Mexican restaurant, and finished off with Ben & Jerry's.

I love the sunglasses above and the beaded purse on the far right.

Grace Coolidge's velvet-trimmed flapper dress.

This is such a sweet painting of Rosalynn and Amy Carter.

Some sketches of past First Ladies' inaugural gowns.

Michelle Obama's inaugural gown...my absolute favorite.

Jason Wu designed with such detail that it made her dress the best in history by far!

Mammie Eisenhower had her name embossed in her inaugural heels!

This was another one of my favorites.

Dorthy's ruby red slippers.

Nastia Luikin's Olympic leotard.

Kermit the frog.

Simba's mask from The Lion King on Broadway...the one show I've been dying to see all my life!

Enjoying dinner at a Greek restaurant back in Alexandria.

My dish was one of the ancient Greek recipes on the menu.

Saturday
Zoo

We stopped at a cafe for lunch on our way to the zoo.

My croissant sandwich.

The cheetah was the only animal we were able to see for a while.

My favorite! This guy was munching away on his leaves!

The elephant was shy and only let us see his back-side!

Sunday
Sightseeing

At the Washington Monument.

My dad and little sister on our way to the WWII Memorial.

At the WWII Memorial.

My sister and brother.

My mom and dad.

The view from the Lincoln Monument.

Inside the monument.

At the Korean War Memorial.

We never walked to the Jefferson Monument because we were too tired to go much further, so we settled for this view across from the Washington Channel.

We didn't actually walk to the White House or Capitol building either, but by that time we were satisfied with what our zoom lenses could do!

Walking the streets in National Harbor.

This little boutique look really cute, but they were closed so we had to sick with window shopping! It was probably the for the best, or we might have missed our table across the street!

My dinner...I forget what it was called, but it was delicious steak, sausage, and vegetable pieces on top of spicy rice. For appetizers, they served us BEYOND WONDERFUL guacamole with homemade tortillas.

We got Ben & Jerry's after dinner and my little sister and I liked their cash register screen!
