DIY: Valentino SS14 Embellished Leather Headband

One of my favorite Spring 2014 collections as a whole was Valentino. It had all the cornerstones of my spring wardrobe -- lace, crisp collared shirts, bohemian prints, suede and strappy sandals. But what really finished every look was the red headband atop each model's head, embellished with studs. The studs reminded me of some gold crest buttons I had and I immediately decided to recreate the Valentino headband.

You can create your own embellished headband by following my DIY "how-to" below. To start, you will need a plain thick headband, red suede or leather fabric, fabric glue, a sewing needle, thread, fabric scissors, and gold buttons.

Step 1: Cut the leather fabric into a rounded strip that will cover the headband.
Step 2: Position the fabric on the headband and tack it in place with glue on just a couple edges.
Step 3: Sew each button onto the fabric, matching the Valentino pattern. The number of buttons you use is up to you, depending on how closely you space them. Make sure they are sewn securely.
Step 4: Once all of the buttons are sewn, glue the rest of the fabric edges to the headband. Pull the fabric taut as you glue to ensure everything will stay in place.
Step 5: This is an additional step, so you may not find it necessary. The buttons I used are a bit bulky so they moved around and jingled on top of my head. Since I'd rather not sound like a Christmas caroler, I tacked each button in place with fabric glue.

Once I finished my headband, it was time for a photoshoot! I put on my most Valentino-esque outfit -- a sleeveless oxford, a new patterned maxi dress and t-strap pointy toe heels. I figured I couldn't go this far without the ear-covering, low ponytail, so I sprayed back any flyaways and completed the look. Thanks to my talented brother for the photos!

A Cue from Chanel

Through the years, Chanel has been a huge influence on the fashion industry. You could even say that the label has formed its own dictatorship on the runway. Each season generates a new "it" Chanel item that every store can't resist to create a rendition of their own. This spring, there were many things to fall in love with-classic tweed, mushroom colored nails, the always-popular quilted purses, sky-high clogs, delicate flower motifs, jewelry tattoos, crocheted dresses, and intricately woven designs. But one understated accessory that added to this faux-peasant theme was the stockings. The sheer tights were given a unique twist with laced-up stripes going up each leg.

I found a website that sells cheaper versions of this trend in easy to wear socks and stockings. For under $10, you can add a little Chanel style without the immense Chanel cost. Aside from the affordable price, the socks are great for hot days when wearing tights could result in overheating. Leave it to Chanel to start a hosiery revolution!

Recreating Spring RTW

Hey guys! Sorry I haven't been posting very frequently...but starting next week I'm hoping I can post a lot more often! This weekend I'm going to NYC so I might not post until I get back, but I'm gonna try to at least post some pictures. I'm soo excited for this trip! My cousin is singing in a concert so my family is going to watch her. We're going to be staying in the Westin at Times Square! I've only gone to NYC once, so I'm thrilled I'll be seeing more of the city!

Anyway, there were many great trends from the spring shows this year and I thought I would do a bit of my own interpretations of the runways. I've chosen a few of my favorite designers and came up with some cheaper ways to achieve the high-fashion looks.

The Look For Less: Sienna Miller

The starlet walking the streets of NYC.

One of my all-time favorite stylish stars is Sienna Miller. I love her as an actress and I love her as a fashionista. She has a bold style that she really takes ownership of. She makes casual bohemian look classy and she makes any gown look glamorous.  The best part about her style is her confidence. Every red-carpet pose dons a big grin and she's never one to be scared of expressing her style. Here is how to get her cool, laid-back weekend look...

Old Navy-boyfriend sweater-$24.50
Doki Geki-ruched sleeve boyfriend blazer-$48
American Eagle-crystal cord-$15.50
Forever 21-soft acid washed jean-$24.80
Wet Seal-stud bottom satchel-$24.50

The Look For Less: Rachel Bilson

Rachel is notorious for wearing her beanies during cold weather, and no matter what she wears them with, she always looks great. This casual weekend look is just as easy to achieve as it is laid-back and practical. The ruffles balance out the edgy ankle boots so you get the best of both worlds. My favorite part is that I was able to find an almost identical ruffled sweater online at Victoria's Secret. It comes in a variety of colors, so if you want something different than plain black, a bolder color would make this look more fun. Plus, it's so warm and comfy, who's stopping you from buying it in every color?

ASOS-ribbed oversized beanie-$17
Banana Republic-petite skinny medium wash jean-$89.50
Victoria's Secret-boucle ruffle sweater jacket (comes in other colors)-$14.99
Old Navy-women's handkerchief tank-$12.50
Forever 21-may suedette ankle boot-$26.50

Total Outfit Cost: $160.49
Rachel's Boots: $499

The Look for Less: Lauren Conrad

I absolutely love the new trend of leather leggings and I really like the way Lauren Conrad put this casual outfit together. Her flowy black and white blouse is just the right length and her turquoise Rebecca Minkoff clutch adds a pop of color. I'm seriously thinking of using this outfit as inspiration for something I'd wear to school...that is when I finally buy leather leggings! I searched for similar elements of this outfit to make it less than an average priced Rebecca Minkoff bag.

Total Outfit Cost: $52.98
A Rebecca Minkoff Bag: $485.70

The Look For Less: Jessica Alba

Jessica Alba was spotted pulling off a hip mommy look with casual jeans and a tank while walking around town with her daughter. What made this look work for her was the feather adorned headband atop her head. It added a unique touch and brought the outfit together. Jessica made a good point that even if you're on the go and don't have much time for a carefully planned outfit, you can still look stylin' by just adding a statement headband. The nice thing about a feather headband is that it goes well with almost anything, and it's an easy way to add some vintage to your look. You can get Jessica's headband from Stella Accessories for $42 or go the cheaper route...

feather headband-Girl Props-$8.99
side feather headband-Wet Seal-$5.50
skinny feather headband-Urban Outfitters-$14.99
feather headband-My Diva's Closet-$15
turquoise feather headband-Glitz and Glamour Boutique-$10

The Look For Less: Jennifer Aniston

Walking in New York City, Jennifer Aniston wore casual khakis and a fedora, while her Stuart Weitzman espadrilles kept her looking put together. With just the right touch of femininity, Jennifer was able to pull off this very simple summertime outfit. This would be very cute for a day shopping or getting iced lattes with a friend. And because the colors are simple, it's a great outfit for showing off the tan you've worked hard all summer to get!

Total Outfit Cost: $51.97
Similar Shoes to Jennifer's: $80

The Look For Less: Blake Lively

On June 15th Blake Lively attended the CFDA Fashion Awards in a hot pink Michael Kor's tube dress. Because the hot pink was so vibrant and attention getting, she didn't over do it. She left her hair loose and sleek, wore nude heels, and added jewelry sparingly. I also love the convenient pockets the dress had...they blended in with the rest of the dress, but were useful for a perfect casual pose. I searched all over the internet to find this whole look for much less than the dress alone.

Total Outfit Cost: $79.27
Blake's Dress: $1,595
