Apple Picking

Fall is one of the upsides to living in rural New Hampshire. The leaves are beautiful when I'm driving around, the air smells crisp, my family stokes up the wood stove, and of course, we go apple picking! An annual family tradition, I always look forward to the pretty apple trees and eating apple cider donuts. However, I leave the actual picking to the rest of my family. After 15 plus years, I've found that it's much more fun to walk around and test each variety while my dad and brother are climbing the trees to grab the best apples. This year, I figured the time I spent wandering around would be a great chance to do a photoshoot. The orchard had a beautiful view of the mountains and a cute, little farmhouse sitting on the top of the hill.

NYFW SS14: Parsons Phase 2

Min Young Lee
The last show I saw during New York Fashion Week was an artfully spectacular note to end on. Parsons' Phase 2 show at Milk Studios was a collective of twelve graduates' work. Each designer had a completely different vision and unique inspirations. They explored techniques, fabrics, dyes, and silhouettes in beautifully outrageous pieces that gave the show a fresh, young-artist perspective. Claudia Li's dip-dyed yarn and Alison Tsai's stretchy knitwear were among my favorites.

Abstract designs like these demonstrate the art form within fashion that I love so much.  It was really inspiring to end my fashion week experience with creative pieces that go beyond wearability and trends. These clothes belong in an art gallery for people to truly see the detail and thought that went into every fiber. Sometimes, designers create pieces that most people would think are ridiculous and ugly, but their designs are more like sculptures than clothes. You will never see someone wearing them on the street, but they use techniques and ideas that advance innovation in the fashion industry.

NYFW SS14: Osklen

The Osklen SS14 collection was an infusion of bright jewel tones and a dash of minimalism. Inspired by gems, Oskar Metsavaht created angular pieces in reflective fabrics and featured kaleidoscope prints of jewels. His solid two-piece looks were simple, with transparent silk and plastic to embody the clarity of gems.

While Metsavaht's designs were admittedly too literal, they were fun and intriguing. Using just one of his pieces could add playfulness to an outfit, especially his palm tree covered, plastic separates which were my favorites.

NYFW SS14: Daisy Fuentes

Daisy Fuentes celebrated 10 years of designing for Kohl's with a getaway inspired collection for Spring/Summer 2014. Because she aims for a more affordable and wearable approach, her collection embodied a wide range of styles within her boho-chic aesthetic. She used bright oranges and reds in conjunction with neutrals and blues. Turbans and head wraps added exoticism. Fuentes really focused on making a woman just as intriguing from behind with intricate cross-back straps and cutouts on the back of shirts. Tropical prints and contrast stripe patterns were perfect for the beach, while the construction of her skirts and pants can take a woman back to an urban environment.

Fuentes created a world within her collection where women can travel freely from the beach to the city. Pantsuits are easy and comfortable for a long flight, while wrap skirts and cropped tops are cool for a day of sunbathing.

What I Wore to New York Fashion Week

I found out that I was going to NYFW just in time for my annual birthday shopping spree, so I got everything at TJ Maxx with New York City in mind. I've been obsessing over leather and really edgy pieces and this resulted in an entirely black shopping cart. I didn't mean for everything to be black, but I figured I would fit right in!

My fashion week wardrobe consisted of two pairs of leather pants, black Cole Haan ankle boots, a studded cross tank, a draped jacket with leather sleeves, lime green Ralph Lauren pumps (that I practically stole for five dollars!), BCBG pointy toe t-strap heels, and a Cynthia Rowley LDB with leather lacing down the sides.
